The next-to-last show of the 2009 Beacon run was a down-home Southern affair, with Jimmy Hall of Wet Willie and Kid Rock joining the festivities. Hall was a dynamo in the first set, leading the band through a bluesy "The Sky Is Crying" and serenading the crowd with two Wet Willie numbers, "Keep On Smilin'" and "Grits Ain't Groceries." Kid Rock hit the stage for a heartfelt version of "Soulshine" and a cover of the Marshall Tucker Band classic "Can't You See," which also featured original MTB drummer Paul Riddle.
The second set opened with a truly historic event--The Allman Brothers Band played "Freebird"! For those of you who are big Lynyrd Skynyrd fans, this is something you absolutely have to hear. Of course, the fun didn't end there, with Ivan Neville adding some New Orleans funk to "Who's Been Talking" and Gregg's son Devon Allman sitting in on "Midnight Rider" and "One Way Out." Paul Riddle added some drum firepower to a spectacular "Les Brers In A Minor," and Riddle, Jimmy Hall, and Oakley Jr. all contribute to a smoking hot “Southbound” encore.
