The Allman Brothers/Widespread Panic tour rolled into this Saturday gig in Massachusetts with plenty of momentum, then proceeded to take it up yet another notch! This ABB set is full of rare tunes and tour debuts, as well as fantastic ensemble playing and special guest flavor.
After the classic opening combo of "Don't Want You No More" and "It's Not My Cross To Bear," the band signalled that this would be a special show by playing "One Way Out" as the third song. When this tune, usually an encore, shows up that early in the set, you know the ABB mean business! A smoking hot "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl" was another early highlight.
Dave Schools of Widespread Panic joined the band on bass for "Dreams," his big fat tone serving the song well as Derek wove a tapestry of beautiful tones. The special guests continued with the tour debut of "Can't Find My Way Home," with Panic lead singer John Bell serving up a passionate vocal on this timeless Blind Faith tune. After a scorching "Statesboro," another tour debut came with a ripping version of "Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad?" This was the first time the ABB played this Derek and the Dominoes classic since they played it at the Beacon with Clapton, and even without Slowhand's help, Derek and Warren are more than up to the challenge!
Jimmy Herring steps back on stage for a thrilling "Mountain Jam," which then turns into an earthshaking extended bass duet dual between Oteil and Schools - that amps up everyone in the band (and everybody watching!). Before you think it can't get any hotter the Brothers slam into a version of "Dazed and Confused" that rocks hard in all its head-banging glory, then back into "Mountain Jam." Best jam of the tour? You be the judge!
Add in an overwhelmingly intense "Whipping Post" encore, and you have a show for the ages!
